TaxProvision

TaxProvision.net

Summary

TaxProvision is a tax SaaS platform used by finance and tax teams to manage document-heavy provision workflows, balance-sheet preparation, and state tax calculations. I joined the project as the sole developer with one QA and took ownership of both product delivery and client communication.

The work focused on making the platform easier for customers to use, faster for teams to complete recurring tax workflows, and more reliable for the client to keep extending without slowing down every release.

My Role

Senior Software Engineer and delivery lead responsible for understanding client priorities, shaping feature scope, coordinating QA, improving the user experience, and shipping customer-facing product improvements from idea to production.

Key Outcomes

~60% faster workflows
Streamlined balance-sheet and state tax flows so users spend less time moving through repeated tax preparation steps.
~70% less file friction
Moved document handling into cleaner file-management and upload flows, reducing manual back-and-forth for customer files.
~45% smoother UX
Reduced slow, confusing interactions across key screens so users can complete work with fewer interruptions.
1 owner from idea to release
Handled discovery, prioritization, implementation, QA coordination, and client updates without a large delivery team.
  • Helped customers move through balance-sheet and state tax workflows roughly 60% faster by removing slow steps and simplifying the journey.
  • Reduced file-handling friction by roughly 70% with clearer document management and direct upload workflows for tax records.
  • Improved day-to-day usability by turning a slow, incomplete product into a more predictable SaaS experience for recurring tax work.
  • Added video tutorial catalogs so customers can understand platform workflows without relying only on support or client training calls.
  • Kept delivery moving as the single accountable engineer, coordinating directly with the client and QA from feature discussion through release.

Stack

React, Hono, Node.js, MongoDB, AWS S3, JavaScript. The product is a MERN-style SaaS platform, but the backend uses Hono on Node.js instead of Express.

Business Problem

TaxProvision had a clear product problem: important customer workflows were too slow, document handling required too much manual effort, and several areas felt incomplete or hard to use. For a tax SaaS product, those issues directly affect customer confidence because users are working with sensitive documents, deadlines, and calculation-heavy workflows.

The client needed the platform to become easier to operate without pausing feature delivery. That meant improving the customer experience, shipping new capabilities, and reducing product friction at the same time.

Delivery Ownership

I operate as both senior engineer and delivery lead for the project. I work directly with the client to understand what needs to be delivered, turn rough requirements into prioritized work, coordinate QA verification, and keep releases aligned with business value.

This setup lets the project move with a very small team while keeping business context close to every delivery decision.

Customer Improvements

The strongest improvements were customer-facing:

  • Balance-sheet workflows became easier to follow and roughly 60% faster for repeated preparation tasks.
  • State tax calculation flows became clearer and more responsive, reducing the number of steps users need to think through.
  • File management became more reliable through direct upload and organized document workflows.
  • Video tutorial catalogs gave users a self-serve way to learn platform workflows and reduce onboarding friction.

Product Health

Behind the scenes, I also improved the platform foundation so customer improvements could keep shipping faster. I cleaned up slow areas, removed unused dependencies, upgraded older parts of the application, and made important screens easier to maintain.

The value for the client is practical: fewer product bottlenecks, faster turnaround on requested changes, and a platform that is easier to keep improving without every update becoming risky.

Results

TaxProvision is now on a clearer delivery path. Customers have faster tax workflows, document-heavy tasks are easier to manage, and the client has a single accountable owner who can take product ideas from discussion to release. The work shows my ability to manage a product area end to end: communication, prioritization, execution, QA coordination, and production delivery.

What I Would Improve Next

  • Add stronger reporting around where users still spend the most time in tax workflows.
  • Expand guided help for complex calculation and filing steps.
  • Build more visibility into upload issues and workflow bottlenecks.
  • Document core tax workflows so future developers and client stakeholders can onboard faster.
